Escape?

In the beginning of the second book of The Hunger Games, Katniss considers running away in the woods so she can avoid marrying Peeta, and be free of the Capitols grip. Now that the Capitol knows about the kiss between Katniss and Gale, do you think there will be more surveilence in District 12, like there is in District 11? If the security does tighten up, do you think Katniss will manage to escape if she chooses too, or will she be forced to live the life the Capitol forced upon her?

  1. As it is, the Capitol pretty much has complete control over everyones lives. Considering this, people are afraid of the Capitol and do not go against orders. Katniss is a different kind of person. She is not afraid of the people above her and she resents them completely, making it easier for her to show disrespect. For several reasons, from this novel and the last, Katniss has been able to see the evils of the Capitol which have created a change in the way she thinks about things. After Rue died, Katniss was able to see how truly cruel the Capitol is. And now in Catching fire she has realized that the government has fractured the relationship she has with Gale. Katniss comments on the fake love she had with Peeta and says, "I'm not sure what it was for me. But I know now it was nothing but painful for Gale" (Collins 9). Katniss is aware of the pain that her best friend Gale has gone through and does not want to lose him any more than she already has. I believe now that Katniss is over Peeta and ready to do anything to be with Gale. Perhaps she will try and run away to get away from the media and attempt to be with him, but there is no saying if the government will be able to find her or not. It will be fairly difficult. Considering the fact that she just won the hunger games and that the capitol is vengeful against her, it will be difficult for her to fall off of the radar if she tries.

  2. It will definitely be hard for Katniss to escape, and for this reason, the best way for her to survive, is to stay in District 12. I think the district knows this because if Katniss chose to leave, she would feel guilty about leaving her friends and family. This is exactly what the Capitol wants. For this reason, Katniss will stay and be forced to live her life with Peeta. If Katniss tried to break her ties with Peeta, the capitol would definitely seize that moment to kill Katniss, Peeta, and most likely Gale. This is another example the of the strong rule the Capitol has over the Districts. Now that Katniss knows she is being watched, she will be more cautious about what she plans to do.I also think that If Katniss tried to leave, she would try to bring her family, which would not work out too well in the long run because they would not be able to survive out beyond the gates of their district. Ultimately, I believe that there is no way that Katniss can evade the life the Capitol has given her. She will have to live her life, reliving her worst nightmare; the hunger games.
