Peeta Mellark

Do you think that Peeta will end up helping katniss during the Games? He has been known for helping her and being kind to her, do you think he will use his kindness as a way to get inside katniss's head?
In a broader view, do you think Peeta will have a larger role in the story other than being someone that Katniss has to fight and kill?

  1. I think Peeta will turn against Katniss during the games because I feel like he is just trying to trick Katniss. I think he told his father to give katniss the cookies to make her believe he was her friend, but as soon as the games begin, he will turn against her. I think Peeta is also trying to get on Haymitch's good side so he will have an advantage in the games.
I think that Peeta will probably get killed by someone other than Katniss during the games because I don't think that either of them has that killer instinct that you need to be successful in the games. It is also hard to see Peeta having a larger role in the story other than getting killed because Katniss is the main character and I doubt the author would have her lose the Hunger games.

  2. I am under the impression that Peeta is a good kid. From what I know about Peeta so far, I would say that Peeta and Katniss are going to become friends and end up creating an alliance. Peeta is a boy who has sympathy for others and will be willing to go against the rules if it means helping somebody out. It is wrong to think that Peeta has been trying to get into Katniss's head because he has been a moral child his whole life. Even though his mother tries to explain that Katniss and a pig and that he should stay away from girls like her, he is inclined to help her out because he realizes her struggle. Also, Katniss and Peeta are from the same district so they already feel a connection. Their relationship has not developed enough yet but through Peeta's actions, it does not see likely that he would turn on Katniss..at least in the beginning. I really cannot judge for the future yet.

  3. I have mixed emotions about Peeta. I do believe that he is a good kid and has good intentions, but I'm not sure if his kind actions toward Katniss are an act. He seems like he could turn either way, but we do need to realize that his kindness may be a part of a plan to win the hunger games. He has the potential to help Katniss during the games, as he has helped her in earlier situations, like when he supplied her with free bread when she and her family were starving but he also has the ability to trick Katniss with his kindness. Eli has a point though, we do not really know what could happen between katniss and Peeta in the future.

  4. Were you surprised that it wasn't Gale who was sent to the games? When I read it, I assumed Gale would be in the arena. Why else spend so much time on him in the beginning? Unless it's to highlight how much a pansy Peeta is.

  5. I was really surprised....they talked about Gale so much that I thought he would participate in the games, and then katniss and gale would have to fight against each other, making the book dramatic and what not. Instead we're stuck with Peeta, who Katniss hardly knows, so she won't have a really hard time killing him...whereas if she was fighting against Gale, it would be so much harder for her.

  6. I feel like if Gale was sent to the hunger games instead of Peeta, katniss would end up giving her life so that Gale could win. Or something like that.

  7. As I continue to read, I am still curious about the relationship between Katniss and Peeta. Much has happened up until the start of the games but the relationship is still questionable. It is unknown weather Peeta is telling the truth or not. Either way, Katniss is aware of the possible deception. Towards the end of chapter five, Peeta explains to Katniss that she is well liked by the public and that she has a good chance in these games. Katniss reminds herself that, "Peeta is planning how to kill you...The more likeable his is, the more deadly he is" (Collins 72). Katniss treats Peeta as a fake friend and compares him to Gale. This allows Katniss to not become attatched as easily. Still Peeta treats Katniss with an utmost respect and even claims to have feelings for her. This is where I question Peeta. I do not see the motive he had to tell the whole Public about his feelings. Perhaps it helped Katniss but it could have also been used as a deceptive way to make Katniss think that Peeta will not be a threat. The truth has not been revealed about Peeta but at least Katniss has her eye open.

  8. I think that Katniss is making the wrong decision by disregarding Peeta's respect. As far as I know, their is no rule in the hunger games that says tributes can't pair up. If Katniss trusted Peeta, I feel like they could last quite a while longer than if they go in the arena alone. Although they cant both make it out alive, they can at least survive longer than most of the other tributes. If they teamed up for a while, they could just split up after a few tributes died and then hope that they don't meet again. The fact that Katniss doesn't realize the big mistake she is making makes me think that i overestimated her as a competitor.

  9. I agree that Peeta would be a huge asset to Katniss throughout the Games. For up until now he has done nothing to prove he can not be trusted and if anything he has been nothing but loyal. Regarding when he professed his love for her, I do agree that this was a huge advantage for Katniss yet it also benefited him as well. For he was now the boy who confessed his love to another tribute, making him equally as unforgettable to the sponsors as Katniss. In this way I believe that he did not do this entirly to benefit Katniss for it was also strategically smart for him too. However, I doubt that his profession of love was purely just for how, I think there is some truth behind it which will affect how he plays in the Hunger Games.
